Retro cartridges live or die by the quality of their PCB assembly and programming. Here's the inspection workflow a competent manufacturer should run on every order — and the questions that expose whether yours actually does.
A retro game cartridge is a deceptively demanding product. It gets physically inserted and ejected hundreds of times, sits in consoles that may be 30+ years old with worn connectors, and carries a save file your customer has invested dozens of hours into. A marginal solder joint or a badly programmed flash chip doesn't fail in the factory — it fails in your customer's hands, weeks after you've paid and shipped. That's why QC isn't a checkbox; it's the whole product.
The Three Checkpoints That Matter
1. Incoming Material Inspection (IQC)
Before anything hits the production line, the components themselves get checked:
PCB bare boards: visual inspection for etching defects, solder mask integrity, and correct panelization
ICs and flash memory: supplier lot verification and dating — counterfeit or recycled flash is a chronic problem in this industry and the #1 cause of dead-on-arrival cartridges
Passive components and connectors: edge connector contact quality is critical for retro platforms
2. In-Process QC (IPQC)
During assembly and programming:
Solder joint inspection post-reflow — visual or AOI depending on volume
Program-then-verify flashing: every chip is read back after programming and compared against the source ROM. Programming without verification is how corrupt cartridges ship.
First-article checks when a line starts your order: dimensions, component placement, shell fit
3. Pre-Shipment Inspection (FQC/OQC)
The last gate before your goods are packed:
100% functional test on real hardware — power-on, boot, gameplay probe, save/write test where applicable. Simulator-based spot checks are not a substitute.
Contact/edge-connector continuity check
Final cosmetic pass: labels aligned, shells clean, packaging correct
Packing verification against your packing spec (inner cartons, master carton, labeling)
Questions That Expose a Weak QC Process
"What percentage of units get functional-tested on real hardware?" — Anything below 100% for cartridges should be a deliberate, documented AQL decision — not a default.
"Do you verify flash contents after programming?" — Read-back verification should be standard.
"Where do your flash ICs come from?" — Authorized distribution with lot traceability vs. grey-market brokers is the difference between 0.1% and 5% field failure.
"Can I get QC photos/video of my order before shipment?" — A factory running real QC can produce this easily. Hesitation is a signal.
"What's your defect claim process?" — Look for a clear window (e.g., 14 days with photo/video evidence) and defined remedies: repair, replacement, or credit.
What Defect Rates Should Look Like
For properly assembled cartridge products with verified programming and 100% functional test, post-shipment defect rates should sit well under 1%. If a supplier can't talk to their historical defect rate, they're not measuring it — and you'll be their measurement system.

Bottom Line
You don't need to be an engineer to buy cartridges well — you need to ask five specific questions and expect specific answers. Suppliers who run real QC welcome them; suppliers who don't will change the subject.
