Genesis and Mega Drive Cartridges: What Differs, and Why the Japanese Shell Does Not Fit

There is a persistent idea that a Sega Genesis cartridge and a European Mega Drive cartridge are two different objects. What we build for a Western release is one shell, and it serves both markets. The cartridge that genuinely does not match is the Japanese one, and if your release is aimed at Japan as well as the West, that distinction decides what has to be tooled and what cannot.

Our Western cartridge shell with the protective case it ships in. If the player above does not start, open the video in a new tab.

That is the part we mould and assemble. Below is what it is, what changes between regions, and where the real break in the family sits. If you are sourcing at volume, the commercial side of this shell lives on our Genesis and Mega Drive cartridge wholesale page.

The Western Shell

The shell we supply covers North American Genesis and European Mega Drive releases. Its footprint runs from 95 mm across the base out to 108 mm at the top, it stands 67 mm above the connector, and it is 17 mm thick. The sides are rounded, the top face is flat, and the edges are chamfered. There is no locking indentation on it, because consoles sold outside Japan have no cartridge lock for one to engage.

It closes with two standard Phillips screws, exactly as Sega used. No security bit, which matters if you plan to service, rework or reflash boards after assembly.

What changes between a North American and a European release is the branding, the label artwork and the packaging. Not the plastic, and not the electronics. The label, sleeve and box are produced as a separate item, and you can see how that is put together on our private label packaging page.

The Electronics Are the Same Machine

The console hardware is the same in both Western regions and the same ROM runs on both. The 68000 and Z80 pair, the 5V TTL bus, the TMSS check and the battery-backed SRAM all behave identically. Region behaviour on Mega Drive is settled by the console and by the software, not inside the shell. For the board side of that, see cartridge PCBs and IC programming.

Japan Is the Different Part, and There Is a Physical Reason

Japanese Mega Drive cartridges are a separate mould: a rectangular 93 mm footprint, 67 mm tall and 17 mm thick, with both the top and the sides rounded rather than just the sides, and an indentation cut into the left-hand edge.

That indentation is not decoration. Japanese consoles carry a cartridge lock, an arm inside the slot that holds the cartridge in place while the machine is powered on. The notch in the Japanese shell is what the arm engages. A Western cartridge has no notch, which is why it will not seat correctly in a Japanese machine, and why Japanese and Western cartridges are not interchangeable without a pass-through adapter.

We do not produce the Japanese shell. Our tooling covers the Western cartridge, and it is an existing mould that we have run for years.

What It Means When You Order

Because the tooling already exists, the shell is not an engineering problem you have to solve or a cost you have to carry. There is no tooling charge, no minimum quantity attached to one region and not the other, no price difference and no lead time difference. If you are covering both Western markets, the same shell serves both and the difference is in the label and the packaging, which we produce separately.

The practical position: we can build a custom cartridge for any game in this shell, on a run as small as 50 units. Quantity breaks, pack data and current lead times for this specific shell are set out on the Genesis / Mega Drive wholesale page. If a Japanese release is part of the plan, raise it early, because that is a different part rather than a variant we can produce from the same tooling.

The Short Version

One Western shell, two Western markets, one set of tooling that already exists. Japan is a different shell with a lock notch, and it is not one we make. For a Western release, the cartridge is a solved part rather than an open question.

Genesis and Mega Drive cartridge wholesale carries the full specification, the price breaks and the lead times. If you would rather start from your own title, send us the specification and we will quote it.
